| Resumo | Numerical experiments using a former operational JMA limited-area model, namely the 12l - FLM, were conducted to assess the model's perfomence in forecasting precipitation for tropical regions. Kuo's cumulus convenction parameterization was found to be superior to the moist adjustment scheme when used in a series of experiments for one selected region in the Tropical Pacific. Equivalent black body temperature maps were used to verify the forecasts. In addition, the model was also tested regarding its sensitivity to changes in the "moistenig parameter" b. The results show a dependence on the critical value of the relative humidity (RHC) in the Anthes'1977 formulation of the b parameter. Based on visual examinations of the TBB maps, values of RHC and the exponent n were selected for the 12L - FLM, but it seems likely that new "tuning-up" will be required if the model is to be used in other regions with different land-sea distributions. |
